Horotane Valley Rockfall Protection

Reinforced rock wall, 52m long, 4m wide and 4.5m high

A reinforced rock wall, set on a clay foundation cut flat in the slope of the hill, measuring 52m long, 4m wide and 4.5m high.

The first layer of the wall was constructed by building up 1.5m of Galmac coated gabion baskets (2m x 2m x 1m), across the full length of 52m and 2 baskets deep (4m wide), laced together and filled with Greywacke gabion boulders (80 – 150mm). Boulders were hand stacked to create a flat, uniform front face.

Then 5 layers of standard Green Terramesh units (2m x 2m x 0.6m), with a front-facing slope of 70degrees, were laced together and filled with compacted AP65. The front face was specified by the client to be rock-faced, instead of green-faced, with the same Greywacke gabion boulders used, to give the finished wall a seamless, flat, uniform finish. Geofabric was utilised to provide separation between the gabion boulders and AP65 layers.
